Accessibility statement

This statement applies to the Register for a national professional qualification website.

This website is run by the Department for Education. We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. You should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the service using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the service using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the service using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have an access need.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • page regions are not identified with ARIA landmarks
  • users navigating with Dragon Naturally Speaking cannot expand accordion elements
  • the ‘Skip to main content’ link is incorrectly positioned before the cookie notice
  • the focus order is not always logical when navigating with iOS VoiceOver

Technical information about this service’s accessibility

The Department for Education is committed to making this service accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This service is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The focus order when navigating with iOS VoiceOver screen reader is not logical, with the focus of some pages starting in the middle of the page and not at the top. iOS VoiceOver users may miss page content or need to navigate backwards to reach the main page content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.3 (focus order).

We plan to resolve this by May 2025.

Accordion elements, such as the ‘I do not have access to a mobile phone’ accordion, cannot be expanded using voice commands when navigating the site using Dragon Naturally Speaking (speech recognition software). This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role, value).

We plan to resolve this by May 2025.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Accessibility issues are captured through user feedback, automated testing, and manual audits. These issues are then prioritised based on their impact on user experience, legal compliance, and severity. We manage them through a backlog system, assigning them to relevant teams for resolution, with regular reviews to ensure timely progress and adherence to accessibility standards.
